Ball Winder
You can wind a ball of yarn by hand of corse, however you will save a ton of time if you invest in a good ball winder. After going through a couple of the cheaper options (all of those broke pretty quickly) I invested this ball winder and I have not looked back! It is really well made and can wind unto 10oz at a time. I also really love it for winding handspun yarns. 

If you are using a ball winder to wind your hank into a center pull ball you are going to want to also have a swift as well. I prefer to use an umbrella style swift
